With a limited budget, digital strategies like the “Digital Door Knock” are a great way to engage directly with voters. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp provide opportunities to connect with local communities. We can also create neighbourhood groups where candidates can answer questions, share updates, and engage in meaningful conversations with voters. Additionally, we can focus budget on highly targeted ads. Ads can be aimed at specific local areas or groups, ensuring the right people see them. Simple, clear videos or graphics that explain the candidate’s key messages can be used to create maximum impact.
Email campaigns are another cost-effective tool. Collecting voter emails and sending personalized updates keeps supporters informed and involved for a more personal relationship with the electorate. Partnering with local influencers, community leaders, or respected figures can amplify the campaign’s message without a large spend. These individuals often have loyal followings that trust their opinions, making their endorsement valuable.
Encouraging user-generated content, such as videos or posts from supporters explaining why they back the candidate, can help build organic momentum. Additionally, using WhatsApp and Messenger for direct communication can create a more personal, responsive connection with voters especially in Guyana where Whatsapp is used a lot. Hosting online events like Facebook Live or Zoom town halls offers a platform for real-time interaction. Finally, leveraging innovative tools like text messaging campaigns or creating memes and challenges on platforms like TikTok can further increase engagement with a small budget.

Targeted ads on social media work better for political campaigns than regular posts because they reach the right people at the right time. Unlike unpaid posts, which depend on followers and shares to be seen, paid ads let campaigns choose who sees their message. This makes it easier to reach more people and get their attention quickly and effectively. However, organic content still has its place as it allows for a diversity if viewpoints and has greater credibility.

Both truth and perception are real but perception needs to be carefully managed through both official and unofficial social media and other communication channels so that the campaign can have the desired outcomes. Integral to this is being able to moitor negative nmessages that are being dissemminated to which audiences and having a flexible and responsive team that can responnd to clairfy and/or correct misinformation, disinformation and malinformation, while ensuring that the correct information nis reaching the target audience.
