I was thought at an early age to stand up for what is wright even if is just you are the only one standing. I was borned and raised in one of Guyana’S poorest Indigenous villages.
My mother who was a single parent with three daughters to raise. She worked under the Ministry of Health when there was a severe elino in the hinterlands of Guyana as a microscopist. There was a breakout of malaria in various villages, we never saw much of her. Her salary was paid to her every three months which put her under pressure with the bills and groceries for us. we all managed. While going to Secondary/high school we walked 3 miles every day just to get an education, when the rainy season came our homes were flooded, we also fetched water from hand dug wells. while growing into a young teenager I always wanted to speak up of the hardships we faced with infrastructure, health and education. The time came when I couldn’t take it anymore, so I decided to run on the municipality elections. This was my very first step into active politics. I was backed by my current political party which is currently the Alliance for Change (AFC). I joined with them after they give me support during my campaigns. I felt welcome in that political party due to one of their principles being Liberal Democracy. Since then, I’m active in politics, I do feel frustrated at time but when I see how my fellow Indigenous peoples are treated it strengthens me to stay the course.
